The evening comprised of an introduction by Sally Lynskey, an amusing warm up act by Lee Peck of the Leepeckgroup who hosted the event and a talk by Fabio Banducci, President and CEO of Peer1 Hosting. They are a large international web hosting company that has just set up one of the biggest and most energy efficient data centres in europe, just outside Portsmouth. Their UK HQ is in Southampton.
I chatted to Tim Ponsford, from Apprentices for Business based in Southampton, Chris Holdup, an interestingly named transport planning engineer from Paul Basham associates, largely on the premise of taking on apprentices rather than graduates in this economic climate as well as Councilor Edward Osmond. Osmond is a recently appointed governor of Tauntons College.
I also spoke briefly to Mike Palmer, a former member of IT/ILT at City College, now a freelance photographer attending the event in his own right..
I didnt get to speak to Fabio Banducci, although I am interested in getting involved in exploring a hosted solution for one or two of our systems and having a very large provider of cloud computing on our doorstep is interesting and could provide some impetus for the digital southampton agenda. Apart from this is it was very much a promotional event for Peer 1's acitivities in the region and the UK.
